weather.com® Exceeds One Billion Page Views in December
Atlanta (PRWEB) January 5, 2009 -- Weather.com, the Web site of The Weather Channel®, exceeded one billion page views in December, 2008, ending the month with 1.1 billion page views, according to internal reporting system data. This is the first time the popular online weather information resource reached and surpassed one billion page views within one month. Multiple record-breaking months helped weather.com reach 10.6 billion page views for the entire 2008 calendar year, also a record.
Throughout 2008, the weather.com site broke its own monthly page view record three times - first in January (958 million), then in February (968 million), and now in December (1.1 billion). In addition, since 2007 the weather.com site has seen five monthly page view records broken (898 million in Feb. 2007 and 932 million in Dec. 2007).
"Surpassing one billion monthly pages views is a rare achievement and it demonstrates how important weather.com is to consumers, who turn to us for accurate forecasts and the weather information they need every day," said Joe Fiveash, executive vice president and general manager, The Weather Channel Interactive.
2008 was a busy year in weather, from tornado outbreaks and wildfires to massive flooding and a busy Atlantic hurricane season with 16 named storms. Some traffic spikes for The Weather Channel Interactive occurred during events like Hurricanes Dolly, Gustav and Ike and severe winter weather. In addition, throughout the year, the weather.com site saw the increasing popularity growth of content areas such as football, health, fishing and outdoor activities. Adding to this were new or expanded sections covering green travel, traffic and the 2008 election.
Records were also broken within the weather company's mobile business, according to Nielsen Mobile numbers. December marked the sixth time this year that The Weather Channel Mobile set a new monthly page view record, and records were set in five months during 2008 for Mobile Web page views. At least seven months in 2008 (with only ten reported by Nielsen Mobile) set unique user records for The Weather Channel Mobile.
